It takes more than a healthy diet and topical treatments to achieve beautiful and healthy skin, hair and nails.  Sometimes, supplements are essential too, especially in aging adults.

As a natural part of aging, your skin becomes less flexible and dry due to the decrease in natural skin oil production.  Wrinkles and age spots may also become apparent.  The hair becomes finer, thinner and less pigmented, while your nails become dull and brittle.

While it’s not possible to reverse aging, there are certain supplements that can help you maintain glowing skin, shiny hair and strong nails even after 50.

1. Collagen

You’ve probably seen this in a lot of beauty products and nowadays, you’ll see a lot of collagen supplements in the form of capsules, liquids and powdered drinks.

Collagen is one of the main building blocks of the body.  In fact, it’s the most abundant protein that helps give structure to our hair, nails, skin, as well as our bones, ligaments and tendons.

As you age, your body’s natural collagen production decreases, resulting to a number of skin, hair and nail problems.  By taking collagen supplements, you can slow down and even prevent the loss of collagen in our body – thus keeping your skin’s elasticity and your hair & nail’s strength.

Food sources:  Wild salmon, leafy greens, tomatoes, berries.

2. Vitamin C

Now with the help of Vitamin C, you can boost your collagen production to fill in those lines and wrinkles and banish them completely – leaving you with a plump, firm and youthful skin.  Vitamin C also strengthens your hair shaft and hair follicles, to prevent your hair strands to brittle and break.

Food sources:  Citrus fruits, berries, bell peppers, papaya, broccoli.

3. Biotin

Biotin is quite known as a supplement to help with hair growth.  That’s true. It treats hair loss because of its rejuvenation properties that helps in cell development.  But aside from that, it’s also good for keeping the skin and nails healthy and strong.  Biotin is a water-soluble B-vitamin which is also known as Vitamin H or Coenzyme  R.

Food sources:  Whole grains, milk, carrots, egg yolk, almonds, Swiss Chard.

4. Vitamin E

Vitamin E or tocopherol promotes blood circulation that benefits your skin and hair.  It can even be used to treat skin problems such as scars, acne and wrinkles as well as help your skin retain its natural moisture content – making you look healthier and fresher.  It also stimulates hair growth, prevents premature greying and protects hair from damage.

Food sources:  Green leafy vegetables, almonds, papaya, kiwi, sunflower seeds.

5. Omega-3

One of the many benefits of Omega-3 fatty acids to our bodies is nourishing the skin, hair, nails, and protecting them from aging – preventing them to get dull, brittle, dry and prone to breakage.

Food sources:  Salmon, sardines, mackerel, walnuts, flaxseed.
