A growing number of baby boomers are taking advantage of social media every day.   And like other age groups, Facebook is the most popular social media platform that is being used today.

That explains why social media marketing is highly used by advertisers nowadays.

Social media marketing programs usually center on efforts to create content that attracts attention and encourages readers to share it across their social networks. The resulting electronic word of mouth refers to any statement consumers share via the Internet about an event, product, service, brand or company. (Wikipedia)

According to www.dmn3.com, who conducted a survey on how baby boomers take action on what they see online, 57.1% of you will visit the company site and 56.8% will continue researching about it.  While 41.3% will visit the retail store and 33.8% will successfully purchase the product.

Based on the percentage, you can really see that social media advertisements indeed strike the curiosity of the majority.

Obviously, it has helped brands gain more exposure and traffic.  But what are the effects of social media advertising to consumers?

Reviews/feedbacks

When ads are posted in social media platforms such as Facebook, consumers are given the opportunity to interact with each other.  As a potential buyer, you can read reviews before you decide to buy the product.  You can even interact with other consumers and form discussions.

Coupons

One of the strategies that brands use is giving out coupons and discounts through social media.  Unlike the traditional way of cutting coupons off of magazines, you can now just browse through your social media account and print the coupons that you think you might use.

A lot of brands have accounts in Social Media where they post ads and sale alerts.  Following those accounts will give you access and instant updates.

Spams

But it’s not all the time that you can find those ads helpful.  Sometimes, it gets annoying when your newsfeed gets clogged up with unwanted advertisements.

Influence in your Purchases

The good and also the bad.  It’s bad when it influences you to buy things you don’t actually need.  Social media has definitely transformed the way consumers shop.  With just one click on your computer or one tap on your mobile phone, you can now buy things even when you are just at home so you end up buying unnecessary things.

With all that being said, I really think that Social Media Marketing is a powerful tool in branding and can be very beneficial to both consumers and producers.
