Having a healthy state of mind is as important as being physically fit.  Oftentimes, we focus much on physical fitness that we tend to ignore the mental aspect of fitness.  Although physical activities help strengthen your mind, it is also advised to do certain things that can boost mental strength.   Not only that, brain fitness can help stave off dementia.

Here are a few ways to improve mental fitness:

Meditation

This is most probably the best activity that you should do daily in order to keep your mind and body healthy.  Not only that it relaxes you, it also serves as a workout for your brain.  It also reduces stress and improves concentration.

Learning Something New

Challenging your brain into an unfamiliar territory is a good way to encourage brain health.  You can start a new hobby, learn to play a musical instrument or learn a new language.  The greater the challenge, the better it is for your brain.

Playing Games

Some examples are:

  • Chess and other board games
  • Computer games such as Solitaire or Memory Games
  • Puzzles (old-fashioned, crossword)
  • Trivia Games
  • Game of Cards
  • Mahjong
  • Bingo

Aside from stimulating brain function, you can also use this as means to bond with your friends, kids and grandchildren.

Reading and Writing

These two activities are great ways to keep the brain active.  These can trigger your imagination and ignite different parts of your brain.

You can start a blog or write a journal.  Subscribe to different magazines or visit the local library.  There are a lot of ways to keep on reading and writing.  The options are endless.

Staying Positive

Being positive helps strengthen your mental well-being that’s why it is very important to ward off negative vibes and just keep on having a positive outlook in life at all times.

Traveling

Like what I mentioned earlier, anything that challenges your brain is a great way to boost mental health.  Traveling to new places, seeing new sights, experiencing new things and being able to eat food that are new to you are definitely challenging to your mental state.

Good Food

Increasing intake of food that is rich in omega-3 is one of the best ways to help your brain function. You can get this from fish (wild salmon), nuts (walnuts), olive oil and seeds (flax seed). There are available Omega-3 supplements as well that you can take.
