Reaching Out Through Instagram

Another social media platform that netizens have been crazy about is Instagram.

Instagram is an online mobile photo-sharingvideo-sharing and social networking service that enables its users to take pictures and videos, and share them on a variety of social networking platforms (Wikipedia).

As of December 2014, Instagram already had 300 million users accessing the site per month.  According to www.statista.com, 11 percent of the Instagram users are between 50 and 64 years old (4% for 65 and above).

As one of the avid users of this app, I highly encourage everyone to get into the bandwagon.   And baby boomers are no exception.

In this article, I will talk about how Instagram can help users from ages 50 and above.

Instagram is a great tool for parents and grandparents to stay active in their kids’ and grandkids’ lives.  Through photo sharing, grandparents can get updates from the members of their family and vice versa.

Unlike other social media accounts, it is very easy to view an Instagram user’s posts because everything will be visible for their followers.  If the account is public, you can still access their photos without the need of becoming their follower.

Millennials make up more than half of the percentage of Instagram users so it is likely that your children & grandchildren are members of this social media stream.

Most of the “kids” these days live far from their parents and grandparents.  And it’s really hard to keep track of each other’s whereabouts.  But through Instagram, you can see what they are up to today… or what they had for lunch… or what places they visited for vacation and the list goes on and on.

As for grandparents, it is a great way to share photos and videos with your friends, relatives or even the public.

Grandparents can also snap a photo of their home cooked meal and upload it for their kids/grandchildren to drool over.  I’m sure they’ll come knocking’ on your door ASAP or write you comments on how they miss you and the meals that you cook for them.

The photo options are endless.  You can post whatever you want and share it with your loved ones (even with strangers).  You can like and comment on photos as well. In a future article, I plan to talk about the How-to’s of Instagram.

I hope that you are now convinced to download the app and start Instagramming.
